THEMATIC ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

I met and worked extensively with Howard Brummitt when I first started in Theme Park design. Most notably Howard produced thematic elevations and planning for New Orleans Square at Disneyland. He additionally did designs for Disney World, and Disney Japan, where on site he was known as 'The Red Pencil'. Howard Brummitt is honored with a window on Main Street at the Magic Kingdom. I only found out about this years after our last chance to meet. Howard shares the window with some heavy hitters in the imagineer world including John Hench, Richard Irvine and Marvin Davis. Also on his window is Walter E. Disney.

Howard did not talk a lot about these experiences but he did say that he really loved working for Walt Disney. I was design lead on numerous projects during the 80's and Howard helped us out. Howard was naturally good at architectural storytelling,.. facades that take your mind for a walk from the water along a dock, an iron gate, decorative steps, a doorway, stepped windows, onto a rooftop deck under a peeled pole lanai. These are places that truly engage. There was never architecture for architecture's sake. Buildings turn into a village and a village into place, a wonderful conversation. Howard was a good friend.
